Social media are a space for people to share their opinions, voice their concerns, display their personal lives, network and make the right connections. There is a digital transformation that affects more than just society, but the subcultures that exist within that. These subcultures face different struggles, while the consequences and adaptations take control of each individual. Equal Man, a social media influencer on Youtube, discovered that out of three individuals, two of those people receive their news from social media websites. While there are many studies that researchers have done, EqualMan provided a quote that really put things into perspective for how subcultures should go about using social media. The quote stemmed from a Social media Revolution Series by Erik Qualman, a speaker for Digital Transformation. "We don't have a choice on whether we digitally transform. The choice is how well we do it," Qualman said. By adjusting how we adapt to digital transformation, it can allow subcultures like "Black Twitter" or "LBGTQ+ Twitter" to control what content they document and how the media tells their stories.Subcultures on social media runs the media industry. In 2018, the Pew Research Center reported that eight in ten African Americans use the power of social media to help bring notice to issues that are not often discussed. While African Americans appear to have the most problems offline, they take it to the web. While African Americans on social media are known to use social sites for expressing their opinions on topics, they do not have the space to talk about in reality. In an article with the University of Virginia, African American Professor Meredith Clark discussed her definition of what spaces like "Black Twitter" really means. When speaking on the issues, Clark refers to this distinctive entity as "a network of culturally connected communicators using the platform to draw attention to issues of concern to the black communities." The Knight Foundation did a feature story on how communities within social media control mainstream news. The organization stated, "Media relies on Twitter subcultures as a source of news." When it comes to documenting our truths, who is going to be responsible? When it comes to producing content, how much does media TRULY rely on subcultures, and what would happen if those subcultures no longer granted access to "culture vultures?"
The BET Social Awards is an award show dedicated to highlighting social media influencers, activist, and individuals that made social media their way to "secure the bag." BETNetworks produced a video that allowed social media producers, strategists, and managers of color to discuss the pros and cons that they face while being in their position. Social Media has algorithms that can predict the age and demographic you are trying to target. When creating content, there must be a strategy and most of the time that will start with researching your audience first. This would be to confirm that what you are creating is for the brand you have chosen. I, personally, would define social media as a way to document one’s life or experience. Some use social media for a political platform, but people like myself (one’s in media) cannot always speak on issues that would harm our brand. With that being said, I think I am a social media user that remains professional at all times, but still shares parts of their life and humorous side. As a professional, it would be straightforward for me to go into working in social media. Being a social media strategist or an editor would be an excellent position because I work well with people and can strategically write to targeted audiences. If I could rate how well I would, with a scale of 1-5, it would probably be a three. I am confident that I could produce something great, and be that voice for subcultures within social media. This would give me an advantage over some because the content that would be created would be more relatable for viewers. With this class, I hope to obtain enough knowledge to make my brand “tight.” I cannot wait to work on my certification to have another perspective of how media is portrayed. I have three goals to be the best mobile/digital journalist I can be and provide quality content for subcultures across all social media platforms.
